AllyTales

AI-powered storytelling platform for inclusive, multilingual childhood experiences.

AllyTales empowers parents, educators, and therapists to create personalized stories that reflect each child's identity, communication style, and heritage language. I designed and built the platform from concept to launch, leading product strategy, customer discovery, AI workflow design, roadmap development, UX decisions, prompt engineering, and product iteration.

The problem

Children rarely see themselves represented in traditional books, particularly those who use assistive technology, have medical differences, or grow up in multilingual households. Parents and therapists often spend hours adapting existing stories or creating new ones to support language development, emotional regulation, social learning, and representation. I identified an opportunity to simplify this process by combining AI-powered personalization with clinically informed design, allowing families to generate stories that reflect their child's unique identity while supporting communication and language development.

What's inside

  • AI-generated personalized adventure stories and social stories tailored to each child's interests, communication needs, and developmental goals
  • Inclusive character builder supporting AAC devices, hearing aids, G-tubes, wheelchairs, and other assistive technologies to improve representation
  • Multilingual story generation supporting major world languages as well as regional, indigenous, and underrepresented languages to promote language preservation
  • Personalized character profiles that allow families to reuse consistent characters across multiple stories
  • Built-in editing tools enabling caregivers to refine story content and translations before sharing or printing
  • Mobile-friendly reading experience designed for families, educators, and therapy settings

What's next

  • Print-ready storybooks and PDF exports
  • Reading level customization based on age and communication goals
  • Expanded multilingual support for additional regional and indigenous languages
  • Parent and educator community library for reusable story templates
  • Additional personalization features and AI-assisted illustration improvements

My Role

  • Product strategy and vision
  • Customer discovery and user research
  • Competitive analysis
  • Roadmap development and feature prioritization
  • UX and product design
  • AI workflow design and prompt engineering
  • Inclusive product design
  • Multilingual content strategy
  • End-to-end product delivery

Technology

Product Decisions

  • Prioritized representation by making assistive technology and diverse identities first-class product features rather than optional add-ons
  • Built separate workflows for social stories and imaginative adventures to better support different user goals
  • Chose AI-powered multilingual generation over a limited library of prewritten books to maximize personalization and language accessibility
  • Enabled manual editing of AI-generated content to allow caregivers to adjust wording, translations, and cultural context

Lessons Learned

Building AllyTales reinforced that successful products are built around deeply understood user problems rather than broad feature sets. Through customer research and clinical experience, I learned that representation, personalization, and accessibility were significantly stronger value propositions than generic AI story generation. Narrowing the product focus to underserved families created a clearer product vision and stronger differentiation while demonstrating how thoughtful product decisions can create meaningful user experiences.

Dynamic Assessment Suite

AI-assisted functional assessment platform for pediatric speech-language pathology

Dynamic Assessment Suite is a prototype clinical documentation platform designed to help speech-language pathologists evaluate functional communication skills in children who cannot meaningfully participate in standardized assessments. I designed and developed the product from concept through a working prototype, combining clinician-created observational assessments with AI-assisted documentation to reduce administrative burden while supporting neuro-affirming, functional evaluation practices.

The problem

Many speech-language assessments rely on standardized developmental norms that are not appropriate for every child. Children with autism, complex communication needs, intellectual disabilities, motor impairments, or limited participation are often unable to complete standardized assessments in a meaningful way. As a result, clinicians spend significant time conducting functional observations and writing narrative reports that accurately describe a child's strengths, challenges, and communication abilities. Evaluation documentation often requires 45 minutes to more than two hours of unbillable work after the assessment has ended. Drawing from my clinical experience as a pediatric speech-language pathologist, I identified an opportunity to build functional, skills-based assessments that evaluate meaningful communication abilities without comparing neurodivergent children to neurotypical developmental expectations while using AI to dramatically reduce documentation time.

What's inside

  • Clinician-designed observational assessments focused on functional communication rather than standardized scores.
  • Assessment libraries covering: Basic Functional Communication, Infant Feeding Skills (0–12 months), Pediatric Feeding Skills, and Adult Dysphagia.
  • AI-generated narrative documentation that transforms clinician observations into professional evaluation language suitable for reports.
  • Functional reporting centered on strengths, emerging skills, and support needs instead of percentile rankings.
  • Documentation workflows designed to reduce administrative burden while keeping clinical interpretation entirely under the clinician's control.

What's next

  • Development paused after completion of a working prototype due to HIPAA compliance requirements that exceeded the capabilities of the low-code development platform. Future development would focus on:
  • HIPAA-compliant infrastructure
  • Secure client record management
  • Longitudinal progress monitoring
  • Electronic Health Record integrations
  • Expanded functional assessment libraries
  • Multidisciplinary collaboration tools

My Role

  • Product strategy and vision
  • Clinical framework development
  • Assessment design
  • User research
  • UX and workflow design
  • AI workflow design and prompt engineering
  • Product roadmap and feature prioritization
  • Prototype development
  • End-to-end product delivery

Technology

Product Decisions

  • Designed original observational assessments based on functional communication rather than standardized developmental norms.
  • Built AI to support documentation rather than assessment interpretation, ensuring clinicians retain complete clinical judgment.
  • Structured assessments around observable functional skills to better support neurodivergent children and individuals who cannot complete traditional standardized testing.
  • Focused reporting on clinically meaningful descriptions that can be incorporated directly into evaluation documentation.
  • Prioritized reducing documentation burden over replacing clinician expertise.

Lessons Learned

Building the Dynamic Assessment Suite reinforced that successful healthcare products require balancing user needs, technical feasibility, and regulatory requirements. While the core product successfully demonstrated how AI could reduce documentation burden for functional assessments, I chose to pause development after validating the concept because the available development platform could not meet HIPAA compliance requirements. This experience strengthened my understanding of healthcare product development, regulatory constraints, and the importance of evaluating technical feasibility alongside customer value before scaling a product.
